When I first started going to watch City as a lad we were getting regular crowds of over 500. Back then though we had factories all down the Lune and Storeys, Nicholsons etc.

Indeed, our average for our final season in the old NPL, 1981-2, was just 249, very similar to the current season.

From 1945-46 after the Second World War, City enjoyed some tremendous support with gates reaching 4,500 but failed to find success. 1946-47 City reached the FA Cup 2nd round, 1951-52 Combination Runners-Up and Cup Winners in the Lancashire Cup.

I quote from the excellent history of the club. The 4500 will have been my parents' generation and will mostly no longer be with us, but what happened to my generation, what switched us off from getting off our backsides to watch Saturday afternoon football?

We cannot blame the rise of nearby clubs such as Preston and Blackpool, on the contrary both have declined since then. Television coverage of sport is obviously a factor, the decline in City's status another but when you compare with Clitheroe for example who have better gates in a town the third of Lancaster's population there is a serious apathy in our case.

Maybe the Lancaster Guardian could run a survey asking folks why they don't go to watch their club, or would not enough people bother to reply?

So what IS the population of Lancaster?

143073 including Morecambe I believe. More than Blackpool and nearly as many as Blackburn

Lancaster itself is about 50,000 I think. If you include Morecambe, Carnforth et al then the 2011 census was 138,375. So as the other Jan says estimates would be in the 140s now.

Pretty ambiguous then.
Presumably these figures include about 15k students?

According to Wikipedia, not always reliable of course, it is 45,952. Whatever it is compare with Tadcaster, population around 6000, who are getting over 300 a game.
Students do watch football I believe

Yes, I also suspect some students watch football occasionally.
Unfortunately very few & very rarely at Giant Axe.
It'd be nice to have more of them & more often but it's always difficult to attract anyone who holds no affinity with the club.
Still leaves 30000 to tap in to.
It is what it is.
