Just in case anyone was considering travelling to Bangor by train, please note that the WCML is closed between Preston and Warrington for majpr engineering.

Yep, you would have to go via Manchester and Chester/Crewe or one of Virgin's diverted Preston - Birmingham services to Crewe and change.
